Organizing a Small Storage Closet in Metairie, LA
A Metairie client wanted a small home storage closet to be more usable and function better.
The closet held a mix of holiday decorations, shoes, strollers, winter coats, utilities, and other household items. It was full, there was no system for the different belongings, and finding what she needed could be difficult. The main purpose of the closet was holiday storage, so the client wanted those items easier to group and locate while keeping the other belongings she chose to store there organized too.
Before: A Full Storage Closet
With a variety of household belongings sharing the small space, items were difficult to find and the closet was not working well for the client. The first step was to take everything out and review it together.
The client decided what should stay in the closet and what would be better moved elsewhere in the home.
Step 1 Review What Belongs in the Closet
We removed the contents and worked with the client to decide what she wanted to keep in the closet and what should be moved to another part of the home. We helped put away the items she chose to store elsewhere.
With the remaining belongings reviewed, we could focus the closet on the items the client wanted close at hand, including holiday decorations.
Step 2 Group and Put Away the Kept Items
Holiday items were grouped in the client’s existing black-and-yellow totes. We labeled the totes with a white Sharpie so their contents could be identified. No new storage containers were needed.
We also organized the other items the client chose to keep in the closet, making use of the available space for the mix of household belongings.
What Changed

One organizer completed the work in two hours. The closet is now more usable, with the client’s kept belongings grouped and easier to locate.
