Our client was preparing to downsize from her New Orleans home and move into a retirement community. Before listing the house, she wanted the garage cleared and presentable for the home's photos.

Over the years, the garage had accumulated belongings that needed to be reviewed, not simply moved to another part of the house. The project called for decisions about what to keep, what could be donated, and what needed to be thrown away. One of our organizers worked alongside the client throughout the five-hour session.

Before: A Garage Full of Decisions

Belongings filled much of the floor and made the garage difficult to use. The client needed to decide what was worth taking into her next home and what she was ready to let go of.

We worked through the contents together so she could make those calls item by item, with hands-on help moving things out as the decisions were made.

Step 1 Sort What to Keep, Donate, or Discard

Our organizer worked beside the client to sort through the garage. She decided which belongings she wanted to keep, which could be donated, and which were no longer usable or suitable for donation. The goal was to make room for her move while respecting her decisions about what mattered to her.

There was a substantial amount to remove. The client rented a small dumpster for the project, and our organizer helped carry the items marked for disposal out of the garage and into it. This allowed them to keep working through the space without leaving unwanted items in the way.

Step 2 Clear Out the Unwanted Items

The dumpster gave the team a place for broken and unusable items as they moved through the garage. Taking those items out during the session, rather than leaving them in piles to handle later, made it possible to see the space opening up.

Step 3 Organize and Sweep the Garage

After the decisions and removal, our organizer straightened and organized the belongings the client chose to keep. We swept and cleaned up the garage so the remaining items were orderly and the floor was open.

The garage was ready to look its best for the upcoming listing photos, with a great deal more usable space than it had at the start of the day.
