Organizing a Custom Closet in New Orleans
Our client had just had a custom closet built in his New Orleans master bedroom. He wanted help turning the empty new storage into a closet that was unpacked, organized, and ready to use.
While the closet was being installed, his clothes, shoes, and other belongings had been packed into laundry baskets and boxes. One professional organizer spent approximately 2.5 hours unpacking those belongings and setting up practical places for them in the new space.
Before: New Shelves, Belongings Still Packed
The custom closet provided hanging rails, shelves, drawers, and pull-out storage, but most of the client's belongings were still in baskets and boxes during installation. The work was not to redesign the closet; it was to put the new storage to use.
Step 1 Unpack and Arrange Clothing
Our organizer unpacked the baskets and boxes, hung shirts and other hanging clothes, and folded the items that belonged on shelves and in drawers. Shirts and pants were grouped so the client could see where each type of clothing belonged.
The open shelves provided a place for folded shirts, while the hanging sections made use of the new rails without mixing everything into one area.
Step 2 Give Shoes, Accessories, and Linens a Place
We arranged shoes in the closet's shoe storage and created designated spots for belts and other accessories. Pants were folded or hung in their own areas, rather than left in the containers used during installation.
Extra linens and other items not needed every day went on the upper shelves. That left the more accessible sections for the clothes and accessories the client uses regularly.
The Finished Custom Closet
By the end of the session, the client's belongings were unpacked and the new closet was ready to use. Clothes were hung or folded, shoes and accessories had designated spots, and less frequently used items were stored on the upper shelves.
The arrangement gives each group a place to return to without making the new closet complicated to maintain.

What Changed
Clothes, shoes, and accessories moved out of their temporary baskets and boxes.
Hanging space, shelves, drawers, and shoe storage were used for the items that fit them.
Everyday clothing is accessible, while extra linens have a place on the upper shelves.
