Closet Decluttering in New Orleans

Our New Orleans client wanted help clearing out belongings she no longer wanted or needed so she could walk into and use her closet again.

Over time, the closet had become a catch-all for clothing, things for her grandchildren, office supplies, gift supplies, memorabilia, and other miscellaneous items. One team member worked with her for about 3.5 hours to sort the contents and restore usable space.

Before: A Closet She Could No Longer Walk Into

Although it was a smaller closet, it held a large number of belongings. Items filled the floor and shelves, making it difficult to find what she needed. Sometimes things would even fall out when she opened the door.

The first priority was to bring everything out so the client could see what was there and decide what she wanted to keep.

Step 1 Empty the Closet and Sort Together

Our team member took everything out and reviewed the items with the client one by one. The client decided what to keep, throw away, or donate, with hands-on support throughout the process.

She made most decisions fairly quickly, which kept the session moving. Other decisions needed more time. Working through each item gave her the opportunity to make those choices rather than simply moving the contents somewhere else.

Step 2 Take Care of Trash and Donations

The client parted with a significant amount of belongings. We kept trash and donations separate as the sorting progressed. Our team member took both with her at the end of the project, so the client did not have another pile to deal with afterward.

Step 3 Clean and Organize What Remained

Once the closet was cleared out, our team member wiped down the shelves and organized the remaining items. The shelves were clean, clothing was accessible, and there was space available for anything the client wanted to store there in the future.

Most importantly, she could walk into the closet again. She described feeling much lighter afterward, as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
